Keeping a journal can encourages self-love, love of life and your world. When you regularly record your thoughts, you will often gain insight into your behaviors and moods. Journaling can be used for problem-solving and stress reduction. It’s been proven to improve mental and physical health, increased self-esteem and personal healing.

Journaling doesn’t have to be a time-consuming habit. As little as 5 minutes a day can be beneficial. It can be done anywhere from a quiet place at home to a busy train station while waiting for your ride. All you need is a pen or pencil and some paper; or journal app on your computer or cell phone (and of course a cup of tea 🙂 for a reflective tea moment).

Here are a few journaling prompts to get you started:

  • Make a list of things you want to do before next year.
  • If you could improve any single skill or talent you have, which would you choose?  Why?
  • What are your 3 best positive characteristics? Why are they the best?
  • I really wish others knew this about me…
  • Make a list of 15 things that make you smile.
  • If money, resources and health were not issues, I would …
  • List 3 things you can do this evening to nourish your soul.
  • What would you put into a ‘professional survival kit’ for your work?
  • List 3 things you could ask others to do instead of doing them yourself?
  • What scares you?
  • What are 3 characteristics you have that you would like to change and why?

I love these journal prompts! I really cherish looking back on my journal entries to gain insight on past struggles and achievements to help me appreciate my present moments. It’s easy to overcome something and then move on in life never fully appreciating how far we’ve come! One journaling prompt I like is to write something for myself one year from that date: “Dear Me, one Year from now. I want you to remember…”.

I used to journal religiously and have lost touch with it over time. Maybe it is time to pick up again. When I read back in old journals, I am amazed at how what seems like now to be a trivial matter was huge in my daily life then. It really does give one perspective. I need to resume again.

It has been a while since I have journaled and I need to get back to it. Sometimes I had trouble coming up with something to write about. One of the prompts I use to break the ice was to pick a color and write about it. What does that color look like, smell like, feel like taste like and how does it make you feel or what does it make you think of.

A journal prompt idea: Make a list of people you are thankful for and something you can do to thank them.

My favourite journal prompt is to write a letter to the last person I saw. Whether the guy at the grocery store, my husband or the woman that reads the news, I always get some interesting perspectives!

If money, resources and health were not issues, I would adopt a child and live in a beautiful house with my family half the time in Toronto and then also find a nice home somewhere tropical. I would also travel and volunteer. My other dream is to own a bed and breakfast and learn new skills.

Writing in a journal helps you remember all the blessings that happen to you. I forget all the little things that really make a difference.
