Spring time is a wonderful time to explore the new beginnings outdoors.  Going on family outdoor field trips to see nature blossoming before us with new plants bursting through the ground and on the trees can be a wonderful experience.

Bears, groundhogs and squirrels are crawling out of their winter homes to explore the woods around them with all the new sights and smells. The calves, lambs, foals, bunnies and chicks enjoy the sunshine and warmer weather as much as we do.

Here are some Spring time actives you and your family might enjoy:

  • Go on a nature walk and count crocuses, tulips and snowdrops
  • Visit a local farm or petting zoo to see the new baby animals
  • Plant some veggie seeds or flowers in your garden
  • Go on a picnic and scavenger hunt
  • Watch or play a game of softball or tag

Spring won’t let me stay in this house any longer! I must get out and breathe the air deeply again.  Gustav Mahler

we still have too much snow – had 6 inches a couple of days ago and now we have wind warnings for the weekend, so we are staying at home. Once the snow stops and starts to disappear we will be off hiking and cycling

My 3 year old son and I were just sharing a rooibos tea with milk and honey as we were hiking in Banff this week. He loves the mug and thinks he’s like an adult when he gets to use it.

This weekend I’m planting herbs (cilantro, parsley, basil, rosemary, etc.) and some veggies to enjoy them this summer and to save energy by trying to eat more salads and foods that can be eaten with minimal use of the stove and oven.

We kick off spring with the family gathering and sharing a meal on Easter. The brave and bold run down to the lake for a frosty plunge. This year the lake is still frozen over so we will have to adapt. Looking forward to the sound of “peepers”!!

my daughter and i pick out flowers to plant and have a flower bed in the front yard every year. Its always different, because we mostly plant annuals, but it is always colorful and so much fun to design and plant!

My husband and I take long walks year round but in the spring the walks are fabulous – seeing the robins and other birds back in town.

Every year my family celebrates hanami by going out to the big park to have a picnic under the sakura trees. It’s a bit of a hassle when the petals decide to fall all over the food, but it’s very beautiful and calming sitting and watching the petals fall while the kids play nearby.
